Hybrid Electric System with an IoT based Smart Energy Meter

Project Description: Energy plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of a country. Pakistan’s weak energy policies have led to a power crisis in the past few decades. This crisis can be overcome by increasing the share of renewable energies to the national grid. Moreover, In Pakistan, conventional energy meters are used for billing assessment, and this requires human effort, which is an inefficient and time-consuming method. Our project aims to design and implement a “Hybrid electric system with an IoT-based smart energy meter,” reducing human effort and saving time by automating the billing assessment. Bidirectional converter and inverter are the main blocks of the project, which converts DC to AC voltage and vice versa , and steps up and down the voltage accordingly to meet the requirements of both the consumer and power up the battery. The energy is supplied to the grid when the consumer produces surplus energy while the consumer utilizes the energy coming from the grid at the time of need. Furthermore, the meter will display the instantaneous voltage, instantaneous current, and the power factor, which will be displayed locally on LCD, and the website. Next, a warning system is also integrated into our meter, generating an alarm when the power quality degrades. In summary, our project will transform an old electro-mechanical meter into a modernized smart energy meter having additional features to improve energy distribution and consumption. Moreover, efficiency and sustainability are improved due to effective operation and maintenance, integrated alert system, and energy benchmarking .
