Market Analysis of Sesame: Unlocking the Potential

Pakistan ranks high in sesame seed production (15th) and exports (6th) globally, supplying raw sesame to major markets like China, Japan, Turkey, and the USA. However, there is no significant focus on the value-added products of sesame at the country level. So, there is a need to explore the maximum utilization of sesame at the industrial level to boost the economy of the country. This paper aims to empirically conduct an analysis of the sesame supply chain, stakeholders’ profitability in consumer’s rupees, their challenges and assessing how value-added products of sesame could provide economic benefits specifically to the growers. This study will include a complete production statistics analysis, with a specific focus from the leading producing cities of Punjab (95%), including Layyah, Bhakkar, Faisalabad, and Mianwali districts. The findings revealed that each stakeholder earning significantly, including farmer 20%, commission agent 10%, wholesaler 20%, while the highest share recorded 50% of the exporter in the sesame supply chain. Secondly, this study will include a product flow of raw sesame in the market and the bodies involved in it, as well as a way forward for the value-added addition of sesame in the form of various value-added products to unlock its full potential for profitability and economic growth. This proposed approach will pave the way for agricultural product-centric businesses in Pakistan.
